I guess that's why I stick with torrents and don't bother with the music stores. :/ But, to be honest, Newtown has a few good indie shops, and JB HiFi isn't all THAT bad.

JB HiFi is where i was. i found only two out of the five records i was looking for, and they really weren't that obscure! it's not THAT bad, but it's kind of a shocker because this is a capital goddamn city and i was in the main adelaide store. i bet i would have been able to find them at JB in sydney!

so what your saying is, there is room for someone who knows american stuff to import it to australia, yes?

i actually have no idea. i think it has to do more with the market and demand than it does with the supply. the way i imagine it is that very few bands can/bother to afford to tour here, so they don't get promoted here, so nobody knows about them, so the stores don't stock their records, so nobody sees their records, et cetera et cetera.

hrmph. maybe there is a job for an indie label marketer then...slightly more horrible, but...

is that a new thing for you as of moving to adelaide? the only cities i have been to that have record stores that stock a lot of stuff i really like are portland and new york. i feel pretty reconciled to the idea that if i want music i will have to order it online.

yes, new as of moving here. my tastes are probably more common than yours, easier to buy for; whether or not that's the case, though, baltimore has this one particular record store that always seems to have everything i'm looking for. in providence, i pir8d all my music, but there was at least one good record store there too. now i do generally buy it (rather than steal it) online. i'm actually liking amazon.com's mp3 service, because the files are DRM-free, you don't pay a flat rate for access, the tracks are still $0.99, plus there are usually discounts if you buy a whole album. that is what i have learned this week about acquiring music!

SoulSeek. (Or, for us Mac types: Nicotine) This, along with the Aquarius Records website, is the only thing keeping me from sliding into fossilized specialization.

i don't like to download music illegally if i can help it! combination of wanting to support artists and not wanting to garner any attention from the Man.

Ah, gotcha. Total sympathy. I resolve this particular moral conundrum by offering my own work up for free download, not to mention I'm legally unemployable and CDs cost a buttload in Europe. Fuckin' exchange rate.
